China Limits Screen Time for Youth

Are the children watching screens all day? In China, screen time is being limited

Instead of arguing with children about screen time, China has found a solution that aligns with the country's values: screen usage for teenagers will be limited to two hours a day, and younger children will be allowed only forty minutes a day

The director of the Cyber Authority in the country has proposed a bill that restricts the use of smartphones for youth under the age of 18 to two hours a day. Adolescents under the age of 15 will be limited to one hour a day, and children under the age of 8 will have a screen time of only forty minutes.

The proposal pertains to cellular devices given to children, and they will be required to switch to a "Child Mode" that limits usage according to their age.

The proposed law also states that usage will be completely prohibited between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM. Additionally, there will be monitoring of online content, and it will be required to be age-appropriate. For toddlers, access will be limited to music content and approved apps only, while older children will have the option to access news or educational content as well.

Exceptions will be emergency notifications and supervised educational content provided by the government, which will remain accessible beyond the time limit.

The proposed law was submitted following an alarming increase in screen time usage among the youth in the country. In China, there are already various restrictions on internet content and online video game time.
