Zelensky at the UN: "Russia has no right to possess nuclear weapons"

In his speech at the UN General Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy referred to the war in his country and attacked Russia's threats with nuclear weapons: "There is no reason for terrorists to possess nuclear weapons and use them as a threat, not only to my country but also to the rest of the world."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke this evening (Tuesday) at the United Nations Assembly in New York when he referred to the war that has been going on, in his country, for a year and a half. In his words, he attacked Russia's threats with nuclear weapons and called on the countries of the world, to unite against Russia and bring an end to the fighting.

"If we are united, we can guarantee peace to all the countries of the world and prevent more wars," Zelenskyy clarified. "Many estimated in the past that World War III would be a nuclear war, and feared the possibility of a nuclear attack. As a result, many countries were taught not to use nuclear weapons for attack, but for deterrence. This is a good strategy, but it cannot be the only one."

"Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in the past, while the world agreed that Russia could possess such weapons. Today, it no longer has the right to possess nuclear weapons," he added and attacked. "There is no reason for terrorists to possess nuclear weapons, and use them as a threat, not only to my country, but also to the rest of the world."

He also warned that "the use of energy as a weapon has also become an accepted thing - when it not only spreads technologies for the development of nuclear weapons but also threatens other nuclear sites in the world. Is there a reason to reduce the use of nuclear weapons when Russia attacks nuclear power plants? This is a scary question."

"When hatred is spread against one country, it will not stop there. Every decade Russia starts a new war somewhere else, and in the meantime, children learn to hate Ukraine and other neighboring countries," Zelenskyy continued. "The International Court of Justice has issued an arrest warrant against Putin following his crimes. If Russia succeeds in its aggression, many seats in the UN Council will be empty."

"More than ever, the world needs to act together to save human lives. Just as there are limitations and deterrence against the use of nuclear weapons, so too must the aggressors and all their ways of war be deterred," concluded the Ukrainian president. "Today, any war can become a world war, and you need global unity to make sure that aggression does not return."
