Against the backdrop of Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana's harsh speech today (Wednesday) ahead of the upcoming discussions in the Supreme Court, the opposition strongly criticizes his words.
In the National Unity (political alliance), they did not remain indifferent to Ohana's statements: "Anyone who says they want to reach agreements that preserve the rule of law in the morning cannot threaten to break it in the evening. The statement by the Knesset Speaker that he will not accept a court ruling 'submissively' is a prelude to anarchy. Netanyahu must distance himself from it, otherwise the State of Israel will slide into a dangerous slope." Knesset Member Gideon Sa'ar said, "Anyone who threatens not to respect the court's rulings is primarily threatening himself. Because a government that does not respect court rulings will lose its own legitimacy."
As mentioned earlier, Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana criticized the judicial system. According to him: "There can be no dispute over whether the Knesset authorized the Supreme Court to disqualify or change basic legislation. The answer to this is clear, and no one can argue otherwise: No. There is no legislative action that authorizes, even indirectly, the courts to do so."
Knesset Member Kariv: "It's crossing a red line."
Members of the Labor Party also strongly criticized the Knesset Speaker's remarks. Knesset Member Gilad Kariv said, "The Knesset Speaker has no mandate to threaten the Supreme Court and its judges on behalf of the entire Knesset. His words constitute crossing a red line and threaten Israeli democracy and the relationship between the authorities. If Knesset Speaker Ohana hints that the Knesset will not respect Supreme Court rulings, he is no longer fit to serve as the Knesset Speaker."
