Anti-Semitic slogans were spray-painted on the window of the kosher restaurant "Monsieur Schnitz" on Saturday morning in Levallois-Perret, near Paris, where a large Jewish community resides.
The municipality of Levallois-Perret has decided to surround the store with curtains in order to hide these "hateful slogans" until the return of the managers who are currently on vacation, explained the mayor of the city.
The police "launched an investigation following the discovery of the graffiti," added a member of the city council. According to him, no further instances of anti-Semitism have been discovered in Levallois-Perret, where a large Jewish community resides. The mayor of Hauts-de-Seine, Laurent Hottiaux, spoke on X about "an intolerable act."
The French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, tweeted on X, "Utterly horrified by these intolerable anti-Semitic graffiti" and praised the "strong responsiveness of the police" that led to the arrest of the suspect.
"In the face of these graffiti in Levallois-Perret, we firmly declare that they will not prevail," responded Jonathan Arfi on X, the President of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions, by casting a spotlight on the "salon anti-Semitism that poisons minds" as "street anti-Semitism that displays its violence in front of us."
