Chinese President Xi Jinping met with US President Joe Biden yesterday (Saturday) and pledged to continue ties with the US, even after Donald Trump's rule begins in January.

In the background is the rare meeting between the leaders of the two countries, which are in a cold war relationship with the conflict over Taiwan's status, the war in Ukraine, the war in the Middle East and trade agreements.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in Lima, Peru and lasted about two hours, officials said.

"China's goal of stable, healthy, and sustainable China-U.S. relations remained unchanged" after Trump's election, with the Chinese president acknowledging "ups and downs" between the two countries. "China is willing to work with the new U.S. administration to maintain communications, expand cooperation and manage disagreements," Xi stated.
