Gallup: Trump and Harris underwater on favorability - but Trump has the edge with this group

A recently released Gallup poll shows both Trump and Harris are more unfavored than favored by the electorate - with one key data point that may swing the election.

A Gallup poll conducted between September 3-15 and released today (Wednesday) shows both Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris underwater in terms of favorability.

According to the poll, Donald Trump is favored by 46% of the electorate and disfavored by 53%, while Kamala Harris is favored by 44% of the electorate and disfavored by 54%, thus making both candidates evenly matched in this category.

There is, however, one exception: Independents, who constitute about 40-50% of American voters according to Gallup's historical surveys.

Here, Trump has the edge: he is disfavored by just nine points, 53-44, while Harris is disfavored by a whopping 25 points, 60-35.

Given that both candidates were disfavored in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, this may not matter, but such a substantial gap among independents may swing an election many believe to be very close.
