A 27-year-old Syrian man has been arrested for allegedly plotting an attack on German soldiers during their lunch break in Munich, aiming to kill as many as possible and spread fear among the wider public, authorities announced Friday. According to the Munich public prosecutor's office, the suspect is believed to be a supporter of radical Islamic ideology.

Earlier this month, the man reportedly acquired two machetes, each approximately 40 centimeters (15.75 inches) long, with the intent of using them in the attack. He was apprehended on Thursday and brought before a judge on Friday. In accordance with German privacy laws, his name has not been disclosed.

The arrest comes shortly after a deadly incident on August 23 in Solingen, where a 26-year-old Syrian asylum-seeker killed three people and injured eight others. The Islamic State later claimed responsibility for that attack, although no evidence was provided.
