Thousands of residents in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, have been evacuated as the swollen Red River flooded streets in the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, which has claimed at least 143 lives.

The powerful storm made landfall on Vietnam's northern coast on Saturday, bringing gales and heavy rains that hit Hanoi and other provinces along the Red River.

In a devastating landslide triggered by flash flooding in Lao Cai province, an entire village was buried, killing 16 people and leaving dozens more missing. State broadcaster VTV reported that a torrent of water swept through Lang Nu village, engulfing 35 families in mud and debris.

Schools in Hanoi have been closed for the remainder of the week due to the flood risk, while thousands of residents in low-lying areas have been evacuated, according to government officials and local media reports.
