A Geneva court announced on Tuesday the conviction of Muslim scholar and philosopher Tariq Ramadan on appeal in Switzerland, for rape and sexual coercion to a prison sentence of three years, one of which will be suspended.

The Criminal Chamber of Appeal and Revision "annuls the judgment of the criminal court of May 24, 2023 by finding Tariq Ramadan guilty of rape and sexual coercion for almost all the facts denounced," the Geneva Court of Justice said, confirming information from the Swiss public television RTS.

It "sentences Tariq Ramadan to a three-year custodial sentence, without suspension for one year". The prosecutor had asked for three years in prison, half of which would be suspended.

"This decision was made at the cost of years of pain and hardship that the complainant went through with dignity. We have rarely experienced such a brutal procedure. The victim is now relieved."
