A new poll by Marist for NPR and released today (Tuesday), the date of the first and perhaps only debate between the presidential candidates, shows Kamala Harris narrowly leading Trump 49-48.

This result shows a relative decline in support for Harris compared to the previous poll at the beginning of August, when Harris won 51% of the vote, a sign that her momentum during her nomination and the Democratic national convention.

Other polls point to a very close race between the two candidates, including a Harvard/Harris poll showing the two candidates tied and a Siena/NYT poll showing Trump enjoying a narrow edge.

With the race so close, the stakes could not possibly be higher the debate taking place tonight at 9 PM EST, as Harris seeks to regain her momentum and Trump seeks to sink her like he did President Joe Biden.
