Iran's recently elected President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly pleaded with Supreme Leader Khamenei to not attack Israel, as this could have a devastating effect on his presidency, according to sources speaking to Iran International.

The President acknowledged that he is not familiar with the military and security aspects of whether or not to strike, but he did say that his opposition was due to his understanding of the national interest.

He said that a war would make a promised economic recovery impossible, deepen the divide between the government and the citizenry, and severely damage the country's international standing.

According to the sources, Khamenei - who has the final say on whether and how to retaliate against Israel for the assassinations of Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh - remained non-committal during the meeting.
