Analysts and intelligence organizations from the West are expressing fears that there is a real possibility that Russia will arm the Houthis with missiles and advanced weaponry, attempting to disrupt global shipping freedom and exact a price for Western support of Ukraine.
Senior officials from Western intelligence agencies, including the head of the CIA’s Middle East Division and counterparts at MI6, have voiced concerns in recent weeks about the likelihood of Russia setting up a supply line to provide the Houthis in Yemen with access to missiles, advanced weaponry, and Russian control systems.
The intelligence assessments suggest that Russia views the Houthis as an effective tool for exerting pressure on the West. Over recent months, Russia has developed a relationship with the terrorist organization, and reports indicate that Russia and China have reached agreements with the rebels, leading to Russian and Chinese ships not being attacked while transiting the Red Sea.
According to current analysis, Russia, having moved past the stage where it could afford to be selective about its allies, is expected to use all means to push the West away from supporting Europe. Similar to its dealings with North Korea’s dictator, Russia may not hesitate to trade with the Yemeni terrorist organization.
The senior officials have expressed significant concern that Russia might supply these tools to the Houthis if NATO discussions about supplying F-16 jets to Ukraine or conducting interceptions by neighboring countries come to fruition.
