Federal prosecutors are asking for a 40-year sentence for David DePape, the man who broke into the Pelosi household and attacked Nancy's 82-year-old husband Paul with a hammer on October 28, 2022.

According to his testimony, the man planned to take the former House Speaker hostage and "interrogate" her. DePape told police that he wanted to break Pelosi's kneecaps to "show other Members of Congress there were consequences to actions."

Reports also state that prosecutors believe that the case "demonstrates that the 30 years maximum on the count with the most significant statutory maximum is not sufficient to meet the sentencing goals" because that they want to deter future cases of politically-motivated attacks against public figures.
