France 24 reports that Phillipe de Gaulle, French WWII hero and later President Charles de Gaulle's eldest son, has passed away at the age of 102.

While more low key than his father, Phillipe joined the Free French forces fighting the Axis and eventually rose to the rank of admiral and served as a French Senator.

Phillipe also dedicated himself to preserving the memory of his father in numerous books.
