French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne announced this evening (Monday) that she resigned from her position after two years in office. French President Emmanuel Macron said he received her resignation letter, saying "I thank her for her work in the service of our nation, she was exemplary every day."

Macron added and noted that Borne "promoted our project with the courage, commitment and determination of a woman and a statesman. From the bottom of my heart, thank you." It was also clarified that Borne will remain in her position officially until a new government is formed.

Élisabeth Borne was appointed Prime Minister of France in May 2022, being the second woman in the country's history to hold the position. However, last March a motion of no confidence was submitted against her government following her and Macron's pension reform that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64, which was passed without parliament's approval.
