IDF Chief of Staff Hints at Resignation Following October 7th Inquiry

"The investigation into the October 7 events is a crucial part of the process. It is being conducted with the utmost seriousness and painful reflection, with the primary goal of learning and improving. Once the investigations are complete, we will make personal decisions and hold commanders, including myself, accountable," Halevi wrote in a letter to senior commanders.

Halevi also addressed recent appointments within the General Staff, defending the decisions and responding to criticism regarding the Defense Minister's delay in promoting two officers until their roles in the October 7th massacre are examined, according to Israel National News reports.

"Appointments are not privileges, but a command and operational responsibility. My duty is to ensure that the IDF continues to succeed, maintain security, and accomplish its missions. This includes appointing and preparing commanders for future roles. The IDF cannot afford to stand still," Halevi explained.

As Chief of Staff, he reaffirmed his responsibility for defining the complexity of missions and ensuring that the IDF stays effective. "We have thoroughly examined the decisions regarding these appointments. When assessing individuals, we are committed to evaluating both their involvement on October 7th and their performance during the war. It’s critical to develop commanders with combat experience, as it’s an invaluable asset," Halevi concluded.
