Ceasefire with Hezbollah hits another possible snag

While Israel and the US continue to finalize a ceasefire proposal, a number of key issues remain potential stumbling blocks in ending fighting in the north, making the hope of an end to the war with Hezbollah ever more distant.

The ceasefire proposal being prepared by Israel and the United States, and set to be presented to Lebanon and Hezbollah in the coming days, is set to hit a roadblock: the Lebanese Army, according to Kann News.

A core part of the proposed ceasefire is the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701, including the deployment of the Lebanese Army in southern Lebanon to ensure no other armed forces are present south of the Litani River and nearer the border with Israel.

But while Israel wants the Lebanese Army to deploy as quickly as possible, the Lebanese government says it may not happen so fast.

Israel wants the Lebanese Army to not only deploy thousands of soldiers in southern Lebanon but also be responsible for preventing any arms smuggling, while the IDF retains the freedom to retaliate for any violations of the ceasefire.
