Egypt trying to get Fatah and Hamas to reconcile

The initiative is part of an effort to prevent Israel from keeping Judea and Samaria separate from the Gaza Strip, thus hobbling any two-state solution.

Egypt is reportedly working on its own plan for the "day after" the war ends in Gaza, with the aim being to get Fatah and Hamas to reconcile and secure Palestinian unity, according to a report by Kann News.

According to the report, delegations of the two rival Palestinian national movements have been meeting in Cairo, and a Hamas source told al-Jadid al-Arabi that Hamas has agreed to form a joint committee with Fatah which will handle civilian affairs, including the war's aftermath.

According to the source, the committee will be made up of non-partisan technocrats, with thousands of government employees who formerly worked under the Hamas government.

Egypt's efforts are aimed at preventing what they consider to be Israel's policy of keeping Judea and Samaria separate from the Gaza Strip, in an effort to hobble the two-state solution.

Several efforts have been made in the past to lead to unity between the two factions, and they have never gotten off the ground due to recriminations over past fighting and the division of power.
