A 55-year-old worker from Taybeh fell into a sewage pit on Sarah Aharonson Street in Mazkeret Batya earlier today (Monday). Initially, firefighters from the Rehovot station had to rule out the presence of hazardous materials. After a situation assessment by the incident commander, they decided to conduct a rescue operation using rope systems and an air supply system for the rescuers.

Simultaneously, a fan was set up for ventilation/suction of air to improve the toxic atmosphere at the bottom of the pit. Fighters from the special rescue unit of the Rehovot station, in cooperation with rescuers from the Lahava unit, built a rappelling and lifting system using specialized equipment available to the units.

The rescuers were lowered to the depth of the pit, harnessed the trapped person with a specialized device, and he was brought to the surface to receive treatment from medical forces who were forced to pronounce him dead at the scene.

The police recently opened an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, which was defined as a work accident.
