US President Joe Biden has expressed concern that the recent elimination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran has complicated efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, Biden revealed he had "a direct conversation" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging him to swiftly reach a deal for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza.

The President stated he is "very concerned" about tensions in the Middle East. A White House statement confirmed that during the call, Biden reaffirmed US commitment to Israel's security against threats from Iran and its proxies, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The conversation also covered support for Israel's defense, including new US military deployments, while emphasizing the importance of de-escalating broader regional tensions.

This development comes amid rising tensions following the elimination of Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut. US officials reportedly expect a potential Iranian retaliation, possibly larger and more complex than previous attacks. There are concerns that US military bases in the area might be among the targets.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza now facing additional challenges.
