IDF, Haredim

Haredim might be more willing to join the IDF - on this condition

A new poll shows that while 72% of Charedim oppose being drafted into the IDF, 59% believe it might be more palatable - if the IDF makes these adjustments.

Today (Monday), a discussion will be held at the Knesset State Control Committee at the initiative of Yesh Atid MK Meir Cohen regarding the drafting of Haredim into the IDF.

The committee will discuss the challenges and opportunities of the draft and examine the needed adjustments to make sure things matters go smoothly.

To that end, an in-depth poll was conducted by the Smith Institute which examined the positions of Haredim towards the draft.

The poll found that 72% of Haredim oppose the draft, with women and the middle aged (30-39) showing the highest level of opposition.

However, 59% of those surveyed said that adjustments allowing Haredim to maintain their way of life would increase the odds of a draft. 37% think these adjustments would increase the odds a great amount or at least somewhat.

Regarding the stance of the Haredi leadership on the matter: 78% believe that the stance of Haredi leadership is largely representative of Haredi communities, with women and those aged 25-49 even more emphatic on the matter compared to men and those of other ages.

MK Meir Cohen: "There is room for improvement and adjustments which can change the picture"

MK Meir Cohen stated that "this is a very important discussion which will examine the challenges and the possibilities of integrating Haredim into the IDF. The results of the poll show that there is room for improvement and adjustments which can significantly change the picture. The time has come for significant service which also applies to Haredi society. Real sharing of the burden starts at the Recruitment Office."
