A new Harvard/Harris poll shows a strong majority supports Israel in the war against Hamas, across all age groups, but is divided on questions such as the fate of the Gaza Strip following a presumed Israeli victory.
Thus, 79% of Americans support Israel against Hamas and 69% think Israel is trying to avoid civilian casualties in its war effort. While the margin is smaller among those aged 18-24, Israel enjoys majority support across age groups.
Just 34% support an unconditional ceasefire, and 66% only support a ceasefire if the hostages are released and Hamas removed from power. Here there is a clear split: younger voters aged 18-34 favor an unconditional ceasefire by single digits, while those aged 45 and up oppose the idea.
Regarding “the day after” Hamas is removed from power, Americans are split: 29% support administration by Israel, 39% support administration by the Palestinian Authority, and the remaining 32% support administration by a new authority set up with Arab nations.
74% think that Israel should continue operations in Rafah, and 56% think that Biden’s decision to hold back arms from Israel only emboldens Hamas.
