After Supreme Court justices Uzi Fogelman, Yizthak Amit, and Noam Solberg issued an interim injunction tonight (Thursday) freezing government support for draft-eligible yeshivah students starting April 1, Channel 12 reporter and political commentator Amit Segal explained what happens next on his Telegram channel, arguing that the uproar conceals a more complicated reality.
“The drama is a little smaller than first appearances suggest,” Segal wrote. “The cessation of funding is for institutions for those aged 18-26, not for everyone, and even there, there’s a possibility for exceptions. The real symbol, draft from here on out, will be on hold until the nine justice panel in May, such that the possibility of Charedi departure (from the government) is not before June.”
“Not that it’s necessarily apples to apples, but this is a relatively conservative panel which ruled 5-4 against striking down the override clause. Solberg (considered a conservative justice) did sign the injunction, but the issue of the Arabs who don’t serve will come up in discussing the issue of equality, &c. In short – drama, indeed, but not yet changes in the fundamental order of things.”
