Decision time for Gideon Sa'ar: Stay in or get out?

Political sources believe Gideon Sa'ar will make good on his promise to leave the government, after his demand to be made part of the war cabinet was rejected.

Having left Benny Gantz’s party and established the New Hope - The United Right party, Minister Gideon Sa’ar is approaching the moment of decision regarding his continued presence in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s emergency government.

Almost two weeks ago, Sa’ar announced that he demands to be made a part of the war cabinet in order to “influence the policy of managing the fighting,” alongside Prime Minister Netanyahu and ministers Gallant and Gantz.

Gantz announced that he refused to change the cabinet’s current complement, which was his condition for joining the emergency government, and Netanyahu also showed no interested in bringing in Sa’ar, who could challenge him from the right.

Sa'ar: “We cannot be in the government”

Ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich also made clear that if there is a change in the war cabinet, they also demand inclusion, making Sa’ar’s inclusion even more difficult.

Sa’ar made it clear last week that he would give the effort another “few days” and that he has no intention of staying in a government he cannot influence: “We entered a government we opposed only due to the war and only to have an influence regarding the war. If we cannot do this – we cannot be in the government.”

MK Ze'ev Elkin also told Srugim/JFeed that “we concluded that we cannot win in this manner. There are two options: either we change the path or we have nothing to do there.”

According to political sources, a decision may be made after Purim, and the fear in the coalition is that such a move will make it hard for Gantz’s State Camp to remain in the emergency government.
