Bezeq, the telecommunications giant, is set to be the third company to enter into competition with the traditional Electric Company in providing electricity to businesses and homes in cooperation with PowerGen, according to Calcalist.

This decision comes thanks to many years of preparatory regulatory work, reform laws, and Bezeq's own testing of the waters to understand how the Israeli electricity market works.

Until recently, competitors to the established Electric Company focused on servicing large customers such as factories and hospitals, which had "smart" meters already installed for fare calculations, while many private homes did not. But the Electric Company says that the distribution of smart meters throughout the country will be completed by 2028, and there are other options such as rate setting based on consumption averages.

Either way, the reform of the once monolithic electricity market, once a hard nut to crack, is now well underway.
