Israel Faces Major Challenges With Surge of Wounded and Post-Traumatic Soldiers

Some 4,600 soldiers have been wounded since the beginning of the war, with about 60 added every day. 20% of them suffer from PTSD-related ailments.

According to Defense Ministry statistics, some 4,600 IDF soldiers have been wounded since October 7, with about 60 wounded being added every day and 20% suffering from mental ailments such as PTSD, according to reporting by Calcalist.

Per the report, the number of soldiers expected to request to be officially recognized as disabled, which usually stands at about 5,000 per year, is forecast to increase to as much as 20,000 in 2024. 45% of injuries are to limbs, 20% psychological, 14% general, 9% internal, 6% spinal, 3% to the eyes, and 3% to the head.

The Defense Ministry is looking to increase the budget for treating this skyrocketing number of wounded soldiers by 1.5 billion NIS, but advocates say that this number barely scratches the surface and does not address the shortage of manpower for assisting those scarred in defending Israel and fighting Hamas.
