Hamas Tunnel Shafts: A Guide

After clearing out the main Hamas forces in a given area, IDF forces are left to deal with thousands of tunnel shafts, with debates about how to deal with them. Here's a handy breakdown.

The IDF's operations in Gaza include not only fighting with thousands of terrorists but also dealing with thousands of tunnel shafts strewn throughout the Strip, all of which serve different purposes.

Here's a handy guide to Hamas tunnel shafts and their purpose, based on the classification established by IDF Intelligence and the Shin Bet, as reported by Walla News military correspondent Amir Bohbot.

Administrative shafts - Narrow shafts made of wood, concrete, metal, or a combination of these, meant to allow Hamas members to move between buildings or structures, away from the prying eyes of IDF eyes in the sky and on the ground.

Logistical shafts - Shafts connecting buildings used for military purposes, built to allow the movement of food, water, weapons, and equipment from place to place.

Offensive shafts - There are two kinds. One contains a hydraulic lift for a multi-rocket system to move up and fire out of the ground. Another has a ladder for lifting terrorists with anti-tank missiles to attack IDF forces.

Classical shafts - Effectively, one-way holes in the ground for terrorists to hide in until IDF soldiers approach, when they emerge to attack.
