Rabbi Mordechai Perlman, a distinguished educator and spiritual guide at Jerusalem's Ohr Somayach Yeshiva, passed away last night (Sunday) at age 76. His death marks the loss of an influential figure in Jewish education who touched thousands of lives through his teaching and personal example.
Born in the United States, Rabbi Perlman studied at the prestigious Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem before dedicating nearly five decades to teaching at Ohr Somayach. There, he helped guide countless students in their religious studies and personal growth, playing a pivotal role in strengthening Jewish communities worldwide.
Known for his engaging lectures on Talmudic law, Biblical studies, and Jewish practice, Rabbi Perlman reached broad audiences both in Jerusalem and through online platforms. Colleagues and students remember him for his exceptional devotion to prayer and his remarkable ability to see the good in everyone – a trait that went beyond mere adherence to Jewish laws against negative speech.
His commitment to positive speech wasn't just a matter of following religious rules; those who knew him say it stemmed from his genuine ability to find goodness in every person he met. "He didn't avoid speaking negatively about others because it was forbidden," one student recalled, "but because he truly only saw the positive in people."
The funeral service was held earlier today at Shamgar Funeral Home in Jerusalem, with burial following at Har Hamenuchos cemetery. The family will sit Shiva at 39 Nesivos HaMishpat Street in Modiin Illit.
