The Breslov community is mourning the sudden loss of Rabbi Shimon Shapira, who collapsed at his Jerusalem home yesterday at age 76.
Yesterday (Monday), under heavy rain and Jerusalem's chill, thousands of mourners accompanied the Rabbi on his final journey.
The funeral procession departed from the central Breslov synagogue in the Mea Shearim neighborhood, making its way to Har HaZeitim (Mount of Olives) where he was laid to rest in the early hours of the night.
In keeping with Breslov tradition, no eulogies were delivered following the burial. Instead, three chapters of Tehilim (Psalms) were recited, along with a passage from the Selichot prayers for the Ninth of Av, a day that commemorates the passing of the righteous.
Known for his magnetic warmth and profound spiritual guidance, Rabbi Shapira touched countless lives through his unique ability to connect with everyone he met.
In what now seems a poignant farewell, the ailing rabbi made one final pilgrimage to Uman this past Rosh Hashanah, determined to pray at Rabbi Nachman's grave despite his failing health. "He could barely walk, but his spirit was unstoppable," recalled one close student. "That was Rabbi Shapira - nothing could keep him from his spiritual mission."
His passing marks the end of an era for the Breslov community, where his teachings bridged ancient wisdom with modern-day challenges. Even in his final months, weakened by illness, he continued receiving visitors and offering guidance until his last day.
